Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly are runes?

The term “rune” is often used in our modern day language as a catch all phrase for any set of symbols that appear old or esoteric in nature. Some people talk about “Witch’s Runes,” “Elven Runes,” “Tolkien’s Runes,” etc., however when referring to runes, most people are generally referring to the Nordic and Germanic Runes, of which there are many different sets. There are the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark, the Medieval Runes, the Anglo-Saxon Runes, and more. See the Wikipedia article below on Runes for more information.

What is a Bindrune?

A bindrune is a combination of Runic symbols for different purposes and intentions using the meaning or sound/ letter of each individual rune. Runes can be combined to create signatures, spells, to honor the gods, family crests, and more. One of the most commonly used Bindrunes is the ‘Bluetooth’ symbol used on our day to day devices. It is a combination of Rune Hagalaz for the letter "H” and Berkana for the letter “B.” It is quite literally the initials of “Harold Bluetooth” king of Denmark and Norway. But again, runes can be combined for a number of different purposes as well. The majority of Bindrunes I create are for spells and manifestations to help empower and enrich the lives of my clients. To learn more about Bindrunes please read the Wikipedia article on Bindrunes below.

How did you learn the runes and where do i get started?

My process for learning the runes is very initiatory. I started by devoting myself to learning each rune one by one every week, diving into deep research from the Rune Poems, modern authors, the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, the Kalevala, and more. I then consumed the rune (on cookies with frosting, I didn’t eat rocks or anything!) and then I preformed Galdr (singing and chanting the rune) to active the rune within me. I did this for all 24 Elder Futhark Runes and then later for the 9 additional Younger Futhark Runes I work with as well. For me, the runes are alive, they are our ancestors, ALL of us. So to work with them, I wanted to build a relationship with them, not just study them like ancient relics like far too many do. For this reason, it is my personal belief that the runes all talk to us in different ways.

If you are wanting to build a relationship with the runes as well but are unsure where to start, I highly recommend starting with a few books to see if this is something you want to dive into more. The main books I recommend are Diana Paxson’s ‘Taking up the Runes,’ Galina Krasskova’s ‘Living Runes,’ and Paul Rhys Mountfort’s ‘Nordic Runes.’ If you are wanting to learn more about how to make and create Bindrunes, stay tuned as I am currently working on writing a book myself on the subject.

What does it mean to be a Universalist Heathen?

Simply put, Universalist Heathens believe that Odin is the All-Father, not the Some-Father. Meaning we do not exclude people from different walks of life. Heathenism is NOT an exclusive practice determined by the color of your skin or the country you live in. Those who work with the Norse and Germanic gods know that they are less than subtle and make their presence known in even less than subtle ways. They communicate to ALL of those who are to work with them. And let it be known now that I do not work with folkish Odinists and others who try and use their spirituality to defend their hate. Heathenism is meant for all.

Why do you work with both the younger and elder futhark runes?

Because 24 runes wasn’t enough for this rune nerd! Joking aside, quite honestly because my gods, guides and ancestors called to me to add the 9 additional runes to my set. I know it is very uncommon for most rune workers to do this, but for me, it makes my set feel complete. They tell the story of what happens after the journey through the Elder Futhark to expand our knowledge and working with them. They are incredibly powerful runes that I love working with.

Do you teach classes about the runes?

Yes, I do! I offer Rune classes one on one either in person at my office at Crescent Moon gifts or online through Google Meet. To learn more about my Rune classes and other Mentorship Opportunities, head over to Mentorship here on my website.

What do you mean by Personal Spritual purposes?

On my different social medial platforms, I create Bindrunes regularly for my clients and followers to use for ‘Personal Spiritual Purposes only.’ I get a lot of people asking what exactly do I mean by this. To clarify, my boundary lies when money is involved. I am often drawn by my gods, guides and ancestors to create bindrunes and sigils to help inspire different people and improve their lives, but not for them to profit off of my work. I encourage my followers to use my public work for the backgrounds on their phones, to print and put on an altar or sacred space, to draw on mirrors or place in lockets, to weave into their crafts and arts to help them on their paths. That however, does not give my followers permission to sell their arts and crafts for profit. Nor does it give them permission to tattoo my work. Whether it be a tattoo artist getting paid by tattooing my work, a crafter making money using my art, or a teacher using my art to promote their class they intend to make money off of, when money is involved it no longer is just being used for Personal Spiritual Purposes. If you have further questions about my Permission to tattoo fee, click here for more info and feel free to contact me.

Why do you charge for permission to tattoo your work?

Mostly to protect my work from potentially harmful people who only see my work as viking aesthetic flash art that looks pretty to them. I also firmly believe in supporting artists for their work. As tattoos have grown in popularity, they have changed from their classical Sailor Jerry style of flash art one would see plastered all over the walls of a tattoo parlor to pick and choose from, to practically any kind of art being placed one people’s skin. While most tattoo artists would create their own flash art and get paid to tattoo their own art back in the day, countless artists are no longer getting compensated in the same way and I simply believe that they should. When money is involved, all parties involved should recieve fair compensation tattoo artist and artist. Click here to learn more about my permission to tattoo fee.
